You guys remember my sub-sandwich-new-friend, Courtney? Well, we took it to the next level. We took the spouses and went on a DOUBLE DATE. As you may have ascertained, I’ve been on team ‘No New Friends’ for quite some time, so this is still something I’m coming to terms with. When I heard that her and her husband are actually foodies and eat other places besides Subway, we decided it was time to take the next step.
We met at the newest spot in the Paseo, FRIDA southwest.
First of all, the design of this place is ON POINT. Lots of natural light, terra cotta, earth tones and just generally cool vibes. Kaleb and I used to go on dates at the Paseo when all they had down there was Paseo Grill and Galileo’s. Good on you, Paseo, for becoming such a cool little art niche of OKC. We were the youngest people in there by about 25 years, so I felt right at home.
Let’s get into the food. I’m gonna include just the highlights so hang in.
I am clearly very pregnant at this point and ordering mocktails is the highlight of my eating out. I usually ask the waiter for something with ginger and lime, and this sweet angel waiter brought me TWO drinks. Do you guys even know my love language? VARIETY! I was sold from this moment on.
The short rib empanadas were the stand-out app. Basically if anything has meat, is fried, and comes with goat cheese, I’m in.
As for entrees, my filet was V good. It had somewhat of a stacked tamale-like sweet potato side that was kind of spicy and I’ve been thinking about it so I know it was good.
On the other side of the table, the scallops and pork belly was the stand-out.
For dessert, we ordered three out of five options. As one does. A goat cheese cheesecake (did not hold a candle to the one they have at En Croute), a fruity tamale trio, and a Mexican hot chocolate cake (cheesecake? custard?) Either way, the Mexican hot chocolate was everyone’s fave. The fruity tamales were texturally rejected by 4/4 people at the table, but Kevin got a really good pic so I’m including it.
I gotta say, FRIDA southwest is one that I am really excited to try again and I don’t say that super often about the newbie spots. The service was very good and as I said, the atmosphere was unlike anything I’ve experienced in OKC.
This ‘making new friends’ thing is working in my favor.
